Matthew 8: 23-27

Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!”

There is power in a name. There is strength (or, for some, the lack of) in a name. The name Jehovah-Jireh means God, the provider.

It is natural to become uneven when life happens, when a diagnosis that you were not expecting comes, when bills pile up, when you might question your next meal, or when there is uneasiness at work that can’t be explained. It’s in the name.
In the Bible passage for this week, Jesus was on a boat with his disciples, when a horrible storm came in. Everyone was overwhelmed and felt death was certain for the entire crew. But, where was Jesus? Asleep. The disciples could not believe it. They had seen Jesus perform miracle after miracle, and understood the assignment. But, did they really? He heard their plea and calmed the sea. They were amazed.

When life unsettles our daily routine, do we have peace? When life interrupts our plan, do we have faith? It can be a hard lesson to learn, but the challenges we face here on earth strengthen our faith and draw us closer to God. Our hope is in Him. He is Jehovah-Jireh.
